Carrier oils are the counterpart to essential oils. Carrier oils dilute essential oils to a safe concentration and enable them to be absorbed into the skin, where they eventually enter the bloodstream and manifest their therapeutic characteristics in the human body.
Today we’re going to review a blend of four carrier oils: avocado, hempseed, olive and sunflower. This blend is used as a precursor ingredient in my aromatherapeutic balm that I will be putting on the market next year. Going forward, every weekly blog article will highlight an ingredient in my balm product.
1) Avocado Oil
Avocado oil (Persea americana and Persea gratissima) is a viscous, olive green colored oil that is highly skin-friendly because it absorbs into the skin easily. It contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, D and E, Ameno Acids, Panothenic Acid, Sterols, Lecithin, and the following fatty acids: Alpha Linoleic, Linoleic, Linolenic, Oleic, Palmitic, and Palmitoleic. Avocado oil is moisturizing, very penetrating, improves skin elasticity, increases collagen, removes impurities from the skin and blends well with other carrier oils. This oil is recommended for dry or sensitive skin, Eczema, Psoriasis, scars, and sun damage. (1)
As with any other essential oil or carrier oil, try to buy only cold-pressed and/or unrefined versions of this product. Refined oils are often stripped of valuable nutrients, decreasing their effectiveness in aromatherapy and skincare applications. Be sure to purchase carrier oils that are specifically formulated for health, beauty and skincare applications, not for culinary (food) use. We’re not eating this stuff.
2) Hempseed Oil
Hempseed oil (hemp oil) is derived from the hemp plant, botanical name Cannabis sativa. The hemp plant is well-known for its versatility. Products ranging from textiles to paints to plastics have been made from this plant. (2)
Hemp oil is made by cold pressing the seeds of the cannabis plant. The resulting oil has a golden brown and deep green hue. I think hemp oil has a beautiful color, personally. And although this oil is derived from the same plant that marijuana comes from, because hemp oil has low tetrahydrocannabinol content and high cannabidiol content, using this oil will not intoxicate you. Hemp oil contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C, D and E, protein, chlorophyll, iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and the following Fatty Acids: Palmitic, Steric, Oleic, Linoleic, and Linolenic. The oil is good for dry, aged and damaged skin, wounds, lesions, reduces skin aging, has anti-Inflammatory properties, and can help treat eczema, psoriasis, and other skin ailments. (5) (6)
3) Olive Oil
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) (Olea europaea) is a high viscosity oil with a deep olive green color. It contains Vitamins E and K, protein, minerals, and the following fatty acids: Oleic, Palmitic, Linoleic, Linolenic, and Stearic. Olive oil is penetrating and soothing, and good for inflammation, acne and bruises. Use caution when incorporating olive oil into formulas. This oil can overpower a blend, so add at a low percentage. 4) Sunflower Oil
Sunflower oil (Helianthus annuus) is an affordable all-purpose carrier oil that lends itself well to massage, because it is absorbed easily by the skin. It is a low viscosity oil with a deep yellow hue. It contains Vitamins A, B, D and E, along with some minerals and the following fatty acids: Lecithin, Oleic, and Linoleic. Sunflower oil is good for all skin types, and helps treat dry skin, skin diseases, aged skin, sensitive skin, bruises, cradle cap, and diaper rash. (9) (10)
I typically blend these four carrier oils in equal proportions in a Mason jar or glass oil bottle prior to use. You have the option of altering the blending proportions. For example, in warmer months, it might be a good idea to lower the viscosity of the blend by increasing the percentage of sunflower oil while reducing the percentage of the olive oil accordingly. A good ratio would be 25% each of the avocado and hemp oils, 10% olive oil, and 40% sunflower. In an 8-ounce glass bottle or container, this would work out to approximately 2 ounces of avocado oil, 2 ounces of hemp oil, 1 ounce of olive oil, and 3 ounces of sunflower oil.
