Four Power Herbs for Skincare

Although my training is in aromatherapy, a year or two ago I learned about the amazing things herbal preparations can do for skincare. In this article we will discover the benefits of green tea, calendula flower, chamomile flower, and comfrey root. We will also learn about infusions, tinctures and decoctions.

I recently became more confident in the benefits of herbs when a certain lady friend of mine applied my aromatherapeutic balm to a part of her hand that was burned recently. She commented that there was no flakiness on the skin on the affected part of her hand.

Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis miller) is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family. It grows in dry climates, such as in parts of Africa and India, and has been used medicinally for centuries. (1)

I remember taking a trip to Avalon, Catalina Island, California back in 2013 with a social group, and one day I had a pretty bad sunburn. A number of Aloe Vera plants grow on that island. One day I decided to break off a piece of a plant, and spread some of the gel on my burns. It worked quite well. My sunburns were less painful and healed faster.

The Fab Four of Carrier Oil Blends

Carrier oils are the counterpart to essential oils. Carrier oils dilute essential oils to a safe concentration and enable them to be absorbed into the skin, where they eventually enter the bloodstream and manifest their therapeutic characteristics in the human body.

Today we’re going to review a blend of four carrier oils: avocado, hempseed, olive and sunflower. This blend is used as a precursor ingredient in my aromatherapeutic balm that I will be putting on the market next year. Going forward, every weekly blog article will highlight an ingredient in my balm product.
